tortugas_marinas2Cuban scientists announced on Monday that they will increase measures to protect sea turtles in the spawning period in the Peninsula of Guanahacabibes in the western province of Pinar del Rio.

Conditions are ready to systematically monitor the turtles that go to spawn every two years at the place they were born.

Scientists, forest rangers and local volunteers take part in the project to protect the turtles.

The hawksbill, the leatherback, the loggerhead and the green turtles are among the species that arrive in the peninsula.

Director of Guanahacabibes National Park Lázaro Márquez praised the development for 12 years of the university project for studying and protecting the turtles, headed by the University of Havana.
