Cubans mark on Monday the 165th birthday of independence hero Antonio Maceo and the 82nd of Cuban-Argentinean guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara.
In this regard, Cuban intellectuals are promoting a campaign to spread the anti-imperialist and independence ideals of Antonio Maceo, one of the most important military and political leaders of Cuba's independence struggles against Spain in the late 19th century. Prensa Latina news agency reports that the campaign is organized by the Association of Cuban Writers and Artists and it will run through December 7, coinciding with the 114th anniversary of Maceo's death in combat. Meanwhile, the 82nd birthday of Che Guevara will also be celebrated in Venezuela and Bolivia. In Caracas, Cuban and Venezuelan poets and writers will host a rally at La Candelaria square while a documentary on the life of the Cuban-Argentinean guerrilla will be screened at the Jose Marti Our Americas House and at the National Library. In Bolivia, Cuban internationalists will participate in a tribute in La Higuera village, where the guerrilla commander was killed in 1967. |
