The community of Herradura, in Pinar del Rio province, is happy today about Mijail Lopez's victory in the Rio-2016 Olympic Games.
'Everything was very emotional, we cried, we hugged, laughed from happiness,' Caridad Reyes, a neighbor of the Lopez Nuñez family for 25 years, said.
'Here we are all like family and we have seen Mijain grow and become a champion,' Reyes stated. She, along with other residents of the community, had gone to the home of the Cuban athlete to experience the excitement together.
This is the third Olympic medal for the 'Idol of Herradura', as he is known. The Greco-Roman wrestler was also world heavyweight champion in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010.
Last year, prior to his participation in the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, the athlete told Prensa Latina, 'with the effort and dedication that Mijain always has had, everything will be fine. Brazil could become my third Olympic medal, another joy that I owe to my people.'
The young athlete complied yesterday with his promise to defeat Turkish Riza Kayaalp 6-0 in the final of the 130 kilograms Greco-Roman wrestling category at Rio 2016, a man who also deserves the respect of the wrestler.
