Cuba with Strong Team to Wrestling World Cup

If visa is approved Cuba will attend the Wrestling World Cup in Iowa, US, with a very strong team of nine freestyle fighters, scheduled Friday and Saturday, the National Federation of this discipline said.

The head of coaches of the technical group, Julio Mendieta, remarked that Cuba is taking its best wrestlers to that match as part of preparation for the Central American and Caribbean Games of Barranquilla, from July 19 to August 3.

Among the main figures of the squad he mentioned the world medalists Yowlys Bonne, of the 61 kilograms, Alejandro Valdés (65), Liván López (74) and Reineris Salas (97).

Reineris Andreu, weighing 57 kilos, Franklin Marén (70), Yoan Zuelueta (79), Yurieski Torreblanca (86) and Yudenni Alpajón (125) complete the team.

According to Mendieta, Cuba achieved the right to participate in the Iowa World Cup for its performance at the Paris World Championships last year, in which its gladiators won two bronze medals.

In addition, they finished in seventh place by countries to qualify to the US competition, with competitors from the eight best nations in freestyle wrestling.

Finally, he referred that after Iowa World Cup they will enter seven fighters to the Pan-American Wrestling Championship in Lima, from May 3 to 6.
