The Guitar Quartet of the University of San Antonio Texas, under the direction of master Matthew Dunne, amused the local audience recently.
At the Art Museum of Pinar del Rio, the young Abram Fernandez, Ashley Lucero, Daniel Schumacher, an Aaiden Witten, performed Paisaje Cubano con Lluvia (Cuban Landscape with Rain) of renowned Cuban composer Leo Brouwer; Keenesiology, by James Piorkowski and Cuba Libre, by Matthew Dunne, among other pieces exquisitely selected.
Dunne said that the visit to the Island had been a goal for a very long time, and now that he could, thanks to the reestablishment of the bilateral relations, that wish could be achieved.
“The exchange has been fruitful, we have visited several schools and the work of the students is amazing”, said the guitarist and composer, who has led the guitar program of the University of San Antonio for 20 years.
Likewise, he noted that Cuba Libre, is a piece inspired by his admiration for the Cuban music and for musicians like Leo Brower.
Yosnier Rivera, guitar teacher of the professional Art School of the province and director of the Guitar Ensemble, marked the opportunity as a very important moment to share with artists. He also acknowledged their donation of strings to the school.
The Guitar Quartet of the University of San Antonio has successfully performed in Texas and New York, and its members have been awarded important prizes both assemble and solo players.
