Cattle Sector Implements Measures against Droughts

Officials of the cattle industry in Pinar del Rio implement measures to reduce the damage caused by the long period of droughts that could last for several months.
Mario Jesús Gómez, deputy director of Agriculture in the province, explained that the tenser situation is taking place in the northern and western part of the territory, since there are places that have not registered rains for three months.
Before the complex situation, the productive structures search for feeding alternatives such as the use of the milling waste of La Conchita factory, noted Gomez.
In addition, they were oriented to collect the harvest waste of some crops like beans, which generate a high level of usable dry matter and covers some 12 000 hectares in the province.
Another measure was the creation of five recovery centres in the municipalities of Consolación del Sur, Los Palacios, Pinar del Río, Guane and La Palma, with conditions to receive and preserve the animals weakened due to the shortage of food and water.
The province also received 10 water pumps to draw out water from dams and rivers and take it to the places were the cattle is gathered.
According to latest reports of the Cuban Institute of Meteorology, last December concluded with 59 percent of the total area of the country with rainfall deficit.
