Authorities of the Ministry of the Interior (Mintur) expect the arrival of new cruise liners in the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, in the westernmost part of Pinar del Rio, during the peak season that begins in November.
With six years of experience in this tourist modality, the local seashore, given its geographical position and beauty, is an attraction for people that travel that route.
“During this season we expect the arrival of Nordic vessel Elizabeth I, and the Ministry of Tourism along with other entities are discussing the possibility that the Opera and the Harmony of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), change their berth in Cozumel to bring it to Guanahacabibes, since there are excellent conditions to diversify the offer on board”.
That was reported by Mercedes Abreu Mesa, director general of Cubanacan travel agency, who also confirmed that the Mintur, with the collaboration of the organisms involved can manage to attract the mega yachts and the cruise ship lines that sail from Tampa to South America.
“Guanahacabibes can become the berth point of a cruise ship for one day or several hours and it has the potential to become a terminal, because the geography of the region makes it possible. Now it depends on each entity to guarantee the conditions needed”.
According to José Manuel Bisbé York, president of Viajes Cuba Group, the demand of the peninsula due to its attractions and the willingness of the authorities to face the challenge of widening the cruise ship activity, will contribute to a major arrival of tourists to the spot.
“Although there are a few conditions to create and others to improve, it is possible to receive new ships. We have had the experience and even with fewer conditions we have given the service”.
