Viñales, located in the province of Pinar del Río aims for the UNESCO Global Geopark status in order to become –if accepted- the first of its kind in Cuba.
Distinctive for its rich geological biodiversity and the promotion of the natural heritage, along with the work of the communities, the UNESCO Global Geoparks intend to foster a sustainable development in their regions.
Doctor in Science José Luis Corvea, deputy director of the National Center of Protected Areas, said to ACN that Viñales has a wide representation of the karst soil, apart from notable characteristics in the country.
One of them is the existence of rocks with evidence of meteorite impact, responsible for a climate variation and the disappearance of many animal species during the Cretaceous.
The evidence of the impact persists in the rocks discovered in El Moncada community, which have a considerable percentage of iridium, -a chemical element present in meteorites- and distorted quartz, a hard mineral that would only transform after big hits, noted the specialist.
In addition there is a place in Ancon valley where Cuban geologists found ammonites, which allowed knowing the age of the Jurassic period pinnacles.
Viñales National Park also counts on outcrops which are typical from San Cayetano formation, the most ancient on the island; and several representations of peculiar topography processes such as the surge of San Vicente river and the traces of ancient floods.
At present they are elaborating the file that fulfil all the requirements of the Unesco office, to present it in all the national entities and then to the international organization for approval.
Corvea noted that at the same time, they are integrating a geological heritage sub-group in the National Monuments Commission aiming at a legal framework of certification for all the sites chosen in the country, because the final idea is to have a geopark network.
