Local AgricultureTakes Measures against Intense Drought

Due to the intense drought period the province is going through and the forecasts of it being extended, the sector of agriculture in Pinar del Rio carries out a group of actions to mitigate the impact of this natural phenomenon.

Ortelio Rodríguez Perugorría, assistant delegate of agriculture in the territory, explained that there is a favorable situation compared to other provinces and this year seems to be normal, since the drought season complies with its climate conditions and it is supposed to rain in the corresponding season. Nevertheless, the productive structures search for alternatives to reduce the damage caused.

At present there are working in the construction of small ponds and wells and the assembly of irrigations systems in order to reduce the areas that receive water by gravity and increase the more efficient ones. They are also enhancing the missions of urban and sub-urban agriculture.
The official added that the tenser context takes place in the northern region, where some lagoons got dry and the tobacco production was affected.
