Humbleness Has a Name

Almost a year ago Rogelio Ortúzar Carreño was granted the honorary title of Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba, but it wasn’t until recently that he received the diploma.

Such recognition came as natural things do, those well deserved and earned: to his home, among colleagues and friends.
While the document was being delivered, a group of young artists improvised a song for Ortúzar, to the man and father he is. Beside him, his wife, in tears, proud of that recognition.

Some people say that this countryman is helpful and no matter how much work he has, there is always time to talk, to listen to people’s problems and help.

Some say that he has dedicated his life to the community; he is taken into account for any decision-making; his ethical and political convictions have made him a man of respect, and the love of those around him have always encouraged him to keep working.

The land knows of his constant worry, the sick in the neighbourhood as well. For over 50 years he has been a member of 26 de Julio cooperative farm and since 1996 its president. He has represented the Cuban farmers abroad and although is better with the land than with words, Ortúzar has learned to defend his heritage in any podium.
He is also a member of the National Bureau of the Cuban Small Farmers Association (ANAP in Spanish), and of the Central Committee of the Party in Pinar del Rio since 2000. Rogelio has been awarded several distinction and medals.
The young artists referred to the leader as a humble man, an heir of traditions, as a man that sows the future.

He addressed that same future: “I’m very proud of receiving this award here, in the land where I was born, with my family, and my people. I will dedicate to help the younger, teach them, because is in them where lies the continuity of what has been done in the farm, in the community, which is my home too”.
