José Ramón Machado Ventura, second secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and first vicepresident of the Councils of State and Ministers toured productive areas and centers of the agricultural sector in the province of Pinar del Río.
He visited an area of 20 controlled curing barns dedicated to dry the leaves of the Virginia tobacco cultivated at Julian Aleman cooperative farm of Consolacion del Sur and showed interest on the energy efficiency, the saving of labor force as well as the potential to increase yields per hectare. In addition, in the fields of Aguedo Morales cooperative farm, Machado checked the increase of crops such as banana and malanga according to the strategy to guarantee their availability during the year and rescue the traditional ones, which are the Cuban people’s favourites. The official also asked about the machinery, the seeds and the preparations for the upcoming harvest season. Machado Ventura also visited the Grain Agro-industrial Company of Los Palacios municipality and tackled several topics such as the levelling of the fields with laser technology, the recovery of unproductive areas, yields and aspects related to vegetable sanity, as well as the fulfilment of the indications of the Ministry of Science technology and the Environment, given the proximity to the coast. In tobacco growing areas of San Juan y Martinez, the official recognized the good shape of the leaves in the curing barns and the fields and despite not being the proper time, it was planted more than the expected, since they hope for better results this year. Likewise, he noted that the increase of the yields and the application of technology are vital for the agricultural development of the country, especially in food production when there is a breakthrough in the use of the land.
