Hurricane Alarm Phase for the Eastern and Central Provinces

According to information from the Meteorology Institute’s Forecast Center, Irma continues to be an intense Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

The hurricane continues on a west-northwestward track, with an increased speed of 28 kilometers per hour.

At 6.00a.m. this morning, Irma was located 310 kilometers southeast of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and over the course of the morning moved across the seas to the north of Hispaniola, with a similar course and little change in its speed.

Given Hurricane Irma’s proximity to the island, it was decided to establish the Alarm Phase for the provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Holguín, Las Tunas, Camagüey and Ciego de Ávila; the Alert Phase for Sancti Spíritus, Cienfuegos and Matanzas; and the Informative Phase for the provinces of Mayabeque, Havana and Artemisa from 11:00 a.m. Villa Clara remains in the Alert Phase, except the municipality of Caibarién, which is now in the Alarm Phase.

State bodies and agencies, economic entities, and social institutions of the provinces that have passed to the Alarm Phase must comply with the actions foreseen in their respective plans, taking into account that the security measures to limit the movement of people and means of transport, as well as other life-threatening activities, must be increased.

The population is advised to keep informed about the evolution of this hurricane, through the tropical cyclone warnings issued by the Institute of Meteorology and the Civil Defense guidelines, and to comply in a disciplined manner with the measures indicated by local authorities.
